Furnival Square

This development occupies a prime site in the centre of Sheffield City and close to the Sheffield Hallam University campus. A 455-bed student hall, with amenities including a gym and communal area on the 21st floor and a landscaped roof terrace with panoramic views across Sheffield and a cinema room.

A key aspiration was to deliver a building constructed in brick, that fitted in with the vernacular architectural style, and to create vertical emphasis. This was achieved by full height projecting brick piers. Given the modular nature of student accommodation layouts, another challenge was to create a composition that avoided repetition. The outcome was a tall and elegant brick building articulated with projections and curtain walling. The top of the building was set aside for communal amenity space and external terraces which facilitate expansive views of the surrounding city.
